Tom Hanks has transformed himself from the party dude of Bachelor Party to the romantic lead of Sleepless in Seattle to the war hero of Saving Private Ryan to the six different characters he plays, amusingly, in Cloud Atlas.
With over 80 acting credits to his name, it’s hard to choose the best Tom Hanks titles. Today we take a look at the best Tom Hanks movies…
30. Finch (2021)
Fun way to stump someone with a trivia question: Ask them, “What’s the Tom Hanks movie where he’s the only human onscreen throughout the entire movie?” When they say, incorrectly (there will be no Helen Hunt and Chris Noth erasure here!), “Cast Away,” let them know how wrong they are by hitting them with “Finch.” It’s just Hanks, a dog, and a robot. Long delayed because of the pandemic and ultimately shelved away on Apple+, Finch is as mawkish and awkward as you might expect from a movie where a man builds a robot companion after a catastrophe wipes out most of humanity. (It’s a solar flare this time.) Hanks is … well, Hanks is fine, but he has a lot of “explains to a robot what being a human is like” scenes, which is a cruel ask of any actor. At one point, though, he dresses up in a panama hat and a thick white beard, and it’s remarkable, and a little disconcerting, how much he looks like J.K. Simmons in Palm Springs, which, as it happens, is a much, much better movie.
