Beauty Objects That Tell the History of Getting Ready
Before getting ready became a shelf of branded products, it was already a world of ingenious objects. Mirrors, combs, scent bottles and cosmetic containers reveal how personal rituals have been shaped by materials, craftsmanship and the desire to keep small things close. These ten museum objects offer a design history of preparation, not advice about historical beauty ingredients.
The Cosmetic Box of Kemeni
Cedar, ebony, ivory and silver turn storage into a carefully composed object in this Egyptian box, dated around 1814–1805 BCE. Its inscribed surfaces identify the royal butler Kemeni. The container belongs to a world in which oils, personal possessions and funerary practices could overlap; it should not be read as a simple ancient equivalent of a modern makeup bag.
