Olympic Posters That Captured the Spirit of Their Time
Tokyo 1964 | Yusaku Kamekura

A red sun, five gold rings and a short line of lettering create one of the clearest announcements in Olympic design. Yusaku Kamekura gives each element room to act, avoiding both a city skyline and a literal sports scene. This is the first design in Tokyo's official poster series, released ahead of the 1964 Games. The national reference is immediate, but the composition feels international: a few familiar shapes are brought into an exceptionally precise balance.
