Jim Graham lives on good terms in Shanghai with his aristocratic British family. But Shanghai, too, could not escape the horrors of the Second World War that swept the world, and was occupied by Japan. Like all lives changed by the invasion, the Graham family's order is turned upside down. Separated from his family and taken to a concentration camp in Japan, Jim tries to turn the scary environment he lives into a part of an adventure in which he plays, with his imagination and courage, into a game he plays. But the uncompromising harshness of circumstances is too overwhelming for a child's imagination to cope with.
