Earth After Dark: The Patterns Cities Leave in Light
After sunset, Earth becomes a different kind of map. Rivers divide glowing neighborhoods, roads trace the desert and entire coastlines emerge from darkness. These ten views bring together NASA astronaut photographs and a satellite observation, each with its original date, to explore the patterns cities leave in light—and the dark spaces between them.
The Nile: A River Drawn in Light
A pale ribbon threads through the desert before opening into the Nile Delta. In this Suomi NPP/VIIRS observation from October 13, 2012, the brightest concentration surrounds Cairo, while smaller lights follow the river south. Acquired close to a new Moon, the image leaves much of the unlit landscape black. It is a satellite observation, not an astronaut’s camera photograph.
