Volcanic Landscapes Beyond Earth
Earth does not have a monopoly on volcanic landscapes. From immense Martian shields and Venusian lava plains to fresh flows on Io and an icy dome on Ceres, these eight views reveal how very different worlds have been shaped from within.
These images include spacecraft mosaics, a false-colour radar map and computer-generated perspectives based on measured terrain. Each is labelled below: a reconstructed viewpoint is not a photograph taken from a lander. Ceres’ icy volcanism also differs from eruptions of molten rock.
Olympus Mons | Mars
The immense footprint of Olympus Mons is easier to appreciate from above than from a dramatic mountain profile. This Viking 1 mosaic shows the broad volcanic shield, its summit depression and the steep, pale escarpment around much of its edge.
Built through repeated eruptions, Olympus Mons is the largest known volcano in the solar system. This is an orbital colour mosaic assembled from images taken in June 1978, not a single ground-level photograph. The patterns surrounding the shield are part of its long and complicated geological history.
