Inside Calgary’s Library Built Around a Working Train Line
An operating train line might seem an unlikely starting point for a library. In Calgary, Snøhetta and DIALOG used it to shape a welcoming public building that bridges neighborhoods, opens into a timber-lined atrium and makes room for many different ways of reading. Follow a ten-photo journey from the street to the Great Reading Room.
A Library Above the Railway

From outside, Calgary’s Central Library reads as a bright civic room raised above the city’s everyday movement. The operating CTrain route is not a decorative reference: its curve passes through the site, shaping the relationship between the building and the ground. Snøhetta and DIALOG turned that constraint into a reason to connect rather than divide. In this evening view, illuminated windows make the interior feel close to the street, while the railway keeps the project firmly attached to the working city.
