Nine Extraordinary Wildlife Journeys Around the World
Wintering Cranes | Japan

Izumi’s fields become a winter refuge for thousands of cranes arriving from farther north in Asia. Hooded and white-naped cranes are among the species that gather on the Kagoshima plain, where dawn offers a particularly memorable view of the birds leaving their roosts. The observation center makes it possible to watch without entering their resting grounds. Use established viewing areas and avoid disturbing birds for a flight shot.
When to look: November–March.
