Olympic Posters That Captured the Spirit of Their Time
Los Angeles 1984 | Robert Rauschenberg

Robert Rauschenberg fills the Games' star-in-motion emblem with fragments of photographs, bringing everyday images into a tightly structured outline. Horizontal bands make the collage look as if it is travelling across the sheet, while the white gaps keep its many details from becoming a single blur. Originally part of the Games' artist-poster programme, this work became the official Los Angeles 1984 poster. It turns an identity into a field of encounters, inviting close looking inside a shape that can still be read from far away.
