Personal Computers That Made the Future Fit on a Desk
TRS-80 Model I | 1977
Radio Shack’s TRS-80 approached personal computing as a complete package for people who did not want to assemble a kit. A keyboard containing the computer sat in front of a separate monitor, with an audiocassette recorder providing storage and BASIC ready to use. The arrangement was modest but legible: each component had a visible job. Sold through a familiar retail network, the Model I helped move computing into homes and classrooms. Its understated gray-and-black appearance made a once specialist activity look more like ordinary desk work.
