Personal Computers That Made the Future Fit on a Desk
IBM Personal Computer 5150 | 1981
IBM’s 1981 Personal Computer gave the desktop a durable arrangement: a low horizontal system unit, a separate keyboard and a monitor above. The 5150 was not the first personal computer, but IBM’s arrival helped establish a shared platform around which hardware and software businesses could grow. It also made a distinction visible between the parts a person touched and the expandable electronics inside the box. The result was less sculptural than some rivals, yet its practical modular layout became one of the most influential silhouettes in computing.
