Personal Computers That Made the Future Fit on a Desk
Macintosh 128K | 1984

The original Macintosh compressed a graphical desktop into an upright all-in-one case, with a separate keyboard and a mouse inviting a different kind of interaction. Windows, icons and menus made the screen a place to manipulate objects rather than only type commands. The 1984 machine followed Apple’s Lisa, but presented that graphical approach in a smaller, more accessible personal computer. Its compact face and disciplined proportions became part of the experience, suggesting that computing could be a coherent designed environment rather than an assortment of separate technical parts.
