Ten Inventions That Borrowed Their Best Ideas From Nature
Lotusan Facade Paint | The Lotus Leaf
Water beads on a lotus leaf instead of spreading into a film. Its water-repellent chemistry and fine surface texture help droplets roll away with loose dirt. Sto translated this principle into Lotusan, a commercial exterior paint introduced in 1999. Its textured, hydrophobic surface reduces the contact area available to water and dirt. Rain can then help clean the facade, although performance still depends on the coating, substrate and exposure to weather.
Biological model shown: a lotus leaf, not a painted facade.
