Almost Invisible: Transparent Animals of the Deep Sea
Barreleye Fish | Macropinna microstoma

Only part of this fish is transparent, but it is the part that makes its face so extraordinary. A fluid-filled shield covers the top of the head, enclosing tubular eyes with vivid green lenses. The small dark marks above the mouth are olfactory organs, not the eyes. MBARI researchers showed that the eyes can rotate from an upward-looking position toward the front when the fish feeds. The clear shield allows the barreleye to look through its own forehead while searching the dim waters above it.
