Inside Calgary’s Library Built Around a Working Train Line
An Atrium That Explains the Building

Inside, the central void does much of the work of orientation. Curving timber balustrades reveal several destinations at once, so the building can be understood through sightlines rather than a maze of corridors. The warm vertical slats give the open space a recognizable rhythm, while the exposed structure keeps it from feeling overly polished. Looking across the atrium, one can read people, books and circulation together. It is a useful reminder that a library’s architecture can help visitors explore, not merely direct them to a shelf.
