London Transport Posters That Made the City Look Different
For generations, London’s transport posters offered more than directions: they gave the city a new way to picture itself. These twenty designs turn gardens, shopping trips, sporting afternoons and the Underground itself into experiments in colour, typography and visual wit.
The Lure of the Underground | Alfred Leete, 1927

Alfred Leete turns an Underground entrance into an irresistible centre of gravity. Tiny figures stream towards the station from across a busy street scene, while buses and shopfronts help establish a recognisable London around them. The joke is immediate, but the composition is carefully controlled: every scattered movement eventually points towards the same destination. Produced in 1927, the poster sells a network through the behaviour of a crowd rather than a diagram of its routes.
