London Transport Posters That Made the City Look Different
The Tate Gallery by Tube | David Booth, 1987

A tube of paint squeezes out the Underground map, turning the everyday meaning of a word into a visual joke. David Booth's design for the Fine White Line agency connects a journey to the Tate with the process of making art itself. The familiar coloured lines remain legible even as they become loose strands of paint. The museum dates this poster to 1987: its appeal comes from changing one recognisable thing just enough to make us look again.
