London Transport Posters That Made the City Look Different
Summer Sales Quickly Reached | Mary Koop, 1925

Mary Koop makes a shopping crowd visible almost entirely through its umbrellas. A lively patchwork of circles narrows towards a tall shop entrance, creating both a sense of movement and a strong graphic pattern. The doorway acts like a destination on a route, drawing the eye through the mass of colour. Commissioned for the summer sales of 1925, the poster makes a familiar London inconvenience part of its appeal: even uncertain weather can become an excuse to travel.
