Nine Extraordinary Wildlife Journeys Around the World
Green Turtles | Costa Rica

Tortuguero’s Caribbean shore is an important destination for nesting green turtles. Females return from the sea to lay eggs, while hatchlings such as the one pictured face their own short, exposed journey to the water. Nesting is seasonal, and no tour can guarantee a particular moment. Join authorized night visits, avoid flash or bright lights and never pick up a hatchling to improve its odds—or your photograph.
When to look: June–October for visits; nesting can extend into November.
