Ten Inventions That Borrowed Their Best Ideas From Nature
AeroSHARK Aircraft Film | Sharkskin Riblets

Sharkskin’s fine, flow-aligned structures inspired a film designed for a very different environment: the outside of an airliner. AeroSHARK uses microscopic riblets to reduce frictional drag when applied in the direction of airflow. Developed by Lufthansa Technik and its coatings partner, the technology is already used commercially on certified Boeing 777 models. Extension to other aircraft requires separate testing and approval; a nature-inspired surface does not remove aviation’s other environmental impacts.
