Ten Inventions That Borrowed Their Best Ideas From Nature
Festo Airic’s_arm | Human Muscles and Bones

Nature includes our own bodies. Festo’s Airic’s_arm explores the human arm’s combination of articulated bones and contracting muscles using a lightweight artificial skeleton and 30 pneumatic muscles. When compressed air enters a fiber-reinforced elastomer tube, the tube expands across its width and shortens along its length, producing a pulling movement. Airic’s_arm is a research demonstrator; the underlying Fluidic Muscle actuators became industrial products. The resemblance concerns movement and structure, not living tissue or self-healing.
