Ten Webb Images That Changed How We See the Universe
The Skeleton of a Spiral | Phantom Galaxy

The familiar spiral becomes a web of filaments in this MIRI view of M74, the Phantom Galaxy. Mid-infrared light brings dust into prominence, tracing fine structures that can be less apparent in visible-light portraits.
M74 lies almost face-on to Earth, giving astronomers a particularly useful view of its well-defined spiral arms. Near the centre, a relatively clear region exposes the nuclear star cluster. The result is not simply a prettier view of a galaxy, but a different way to study where stars are forming.
