Volcanic Landscapes Beyond Earth
At the Foot of Gruithuisen Gamma | Moon
A narrow rille follows the base of Gruithuisen Gamma where the dome meets the surrounding lunar mare. This close-up from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is only about 1.6 kilometres across: it shows a boundary within the landscape, not a full portrait of all three Gruithuisen domes.
The domes are associated with unusually silica-rich volcanic material, contrasting with the basaltic lava plains around them. Their origin remains an important question in lunar geology. Here, low-angle light brings small relief changes into focus without the need for assigned colour or an exaggerated perspective.
