Volcanic Landscapes Beyond Earth
An Icy Kind of Volcano | Ahuna Mons, Ceres
Ahuna Mons rises sharply from the cratered surface of the dwarf planet Ceres. Dawn’s images revealed a strikingly isolated mountain, around four kilometres high on average, whose dome-like form points to a different kind of volcanism.
Scientists interpret it as a cryovolcanic dome, probably built from salty, muddy material rather than molten rock. The perspective here is reconstructed from Dawn imagery taken in December 2015. It brings the mountain’s steep sides into view without pretending that a camera stood beside it.
