Almost Invisible: Transparent Animals of the Deep Sea
Common Siphonophore | Nanomia bijuga

What looks like a slender, nearly transparent animal is a coordinated colony of specialized units. In Nanomia bijuga, swimming bells pull a trailing arrangement of parts devoted to feeding, defense and reproduction. It catches small animals with stinging tentacles, often pausing to spread its fishing apparatus before moving to another spot. In Monterey Bay, these siphonophores are significant predators of krill. Their delicate outline hides a highly organized way of life: a drifting body in which different components perform the tasks that one animal would otherwise manage alone.
