Almost Invisible: Transparent Animals of the Deep Sea
Balloon Worm | Poeobius meseres

Poeobius meseres scarcely resembles the segmented, bristly worms familiar from the seafloor. Its smooth, fluid-filled body and thick gelatinous coat help it remain suspended in open water without constant effort. It gathers sinking organic particles in a mucous net, feeding on material that connects the sunlit ocean to the deep. The pale outer body makes its coiled gut and delicate tentacles particularly noticeable. This is a worm adapted for drifting and filtering rather than crawling, with an unobtrusive appearance that suits a habitat offering little physical cover.
