Earth After Dark: The Patterns Cities Leave in Light
Istanbul: Two Shores, One City

The Bosporus cuts a dark passage through a city that continues on both sides of the water. In this August 9, 2012 photograph, illuminated shorelines and major roads help reveal Istanbul’s geography, while wooded hills interrupt the urban glow. The view includes much of the Asian side and only part of the European side. It captures a particular night, not the city’s present-day extent.
