Ten Webb Images That Changed How We See the Universe
A ridge of newborn stars, galaxies caught in a gravitational dance and the intricate remains of ageing suns: Webb makes the invisible feel almost tangible. These ten views reveal what the James Webb Space Telescope can uncover when it looks at the universe in infrared light.
Webb records wavelengths largely invisible to human eyes. The colours in this gallery are assigned to different filters to reveal scientific detail; these are processed observations, not natural-colour snapshots or AI-generated scenes.
Webb’s First Deep Field | SMACS 0723
At first this looks like a crowded patch of stars. Look again: most of the tiny shapes are galaxies, and the curved orange streaks are distant galaxies whose light has been bent and magnified by the mass of the foreground cluster.
Released in July 2022, this NIRCam view made gravitational lensing feel almost visible. The cluster acts as a natural magnifying glass, giving Webb access to details in galaxies far beyond it. The arcs are not the paths of moving stars.
