Industrial Buildings Reborn as Cultural Landmarks
Power stations, grain silos and steelworks were built for very specific jobs. When those jobs disappear, their generous spaces and unmistakable structures can take on a new public life. These eight projects show how industrial architecture can become a setting for art, learning, performance and everyday encounters without losing the evidence of its past.

Bankside Power Station’s brick mass and chimney still tell a story of electricity generation, but the building now frames a different kind of public energy. Herzog & de Meuron’s conversion, realized between 1998 and 2000, turned the former turbine hall into a vast meeting and exhibition space. The strength of the project is not that industry disappears. Its scale remains central to the experience, allowing art and visitors to occupy a structure whose original purpose can still be read from the opposite bank of the Thames.
