Industrial Buildings Reborn as Cultural Landmarks
Zeitz MOCAA — Cape Town, South Africa
A grain silo is an unlikely starting point for a museum, yet its tightly packed concrete tubes became the key to Zeitz MOCAA’s identity. Heatherwick Studio carved a dramatic atrium from the old structure rather than treating the industrial fabric as a shell to be hidden. Galleries dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora sit within this transformed waterfront complex. The result makes subtraction feel architectural: the void is memorable precisely because the surrounding concrete still reveals how the building once worked.
