Industrial Buildings Reborn as Cultural Landmarks
CaixaForum Madrid — Madrid, Spain

The former Mediodía power station becomes a cultural destination through a carefully staged contrast between weight and openness. Herzog & de Meuron preserved the historic brick shell but removed its base, creating a sheltered public plaza beneath a volume that appears to hover. Above, a new metal-clad roofline gives the converted building a different silhouette. The familiar industrial wall is neither simply restored nor erased: it becomes one layer in a new composition that links exhibition spaces, a civic entrance and the street.
