Industrial Buildings Reborn as Cultural Landmarks
Westergas — Amsterdam, the Netherlands

The buildings of Amsterdam’s former gasworks now sit within a cultural landscape rather than an industrial compound. After gas production ended in 1967, artists and creative entrepreneurs gradually helped establish a new role for the site; a major redevelopment followed in 2003. Renovated factory buildings, public routes and planted spaces support a mix of cultural and everyday activities. The transformation extends beyond the architecture of any single hall. It shows how inherited structures can become anchors for a neighborhood park instead of isolated monuments to a vanished industry.
