Industrial Buildings Reborn as Cultural Landmarks
Chongqing Industrial Museum — Chongqing, China

At Chongqing Industrial Museum, the former steelworks is not only a container for exhibits: it is part of what visitors have come to see. WallaceLiu inserted raised exhibition volumes among the surviving structural elements, keeping long views through the old factory. New bridges connect the enclosed rooms, repeatedly returning visitors to the larger industrial setting. The contrast between lightweight additions and heavy remnants makes the history legible without freezing the site. A once-specialized working environment becomes a place for public encounter, observation and cultural interpretation.
