Industrial Buildings Reborn as Cultural Landmarks
Arsenale — Venice, Italy
Venice’s Arsenale once helped produce the ships that supported the city’s maritime power. Its long halls and waterside structures now also accommodate the exhibitions and events of La Biennale di Venezia, which began using the site in 1980. The scale of the old production complex is central to its cultural life: repetitive columns, broad roof spans and generous volumes give exhibitions a setting unlike a conventional gallery. Here, reuse is not a single finished gesture but a continuing relationship between historic infrastructure and changing temporary installations.
