Japanese Gardens Where Every View Is Designed
Kiyosumi | Tokyo

The stones at Kiyosumi are not incidental decoration. Collected from different parts of Japan, they define the pond’s margins and create routes that bring walkers close to the water. This Meiji-era strolling garden once belonged to the Iwasaki family. Its composition alternates between long views and attention to individual surfaces: a rock’s irregular edge, a low island or the precise way a pavilion meets its reflection.
