Takachiho Gorge | A Waterfall Between Volcanic Walls
Takachiho compresses several landscapes into one view: water, wooded slopes and sheer rock that seems to have been pleated. Ancient volcanic material cooled into the columnar formations along this gorge in Miyazaki, while the Gokase River runs through the narrow passage below. Manai Falls drops into that water, giving the scene its unmistakable vertical line. Small rowing boats make the scale legible, but the paths above offer another way to read the relationship between cliff, canopy and river.
