Japan’s Natural Wonders Beyond the Familiar View
Biei’s Blue Pond | A Landscape With an Unexpected Origin

The pale trunks rising from Biei’s Blue Pond look almost like marks left in a painting. Yet this Hokkaido landmark began as part of an erosion-control project intended to protect the area from volcanic mudflows. Its remarkable color is associated with minerals suspended in the water, and changes with weather, light and season. That mixture of engineering and natural chemistry makes the view more interesting, not less: an accidental landscape that never holds exactly the same shade of blue.
