Japan’s Natural Wonders Beyond the Familiar View
Tateyama’s Snow Corridor | A Road Cut Through Winter

Near Murodo on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, deep snow becomes a startling measure of human scale. Crews cut a road through the accumulated snowpack, leaving high white walls on either side. The corridor is therefore a collaboration between mountain weather and careful engineering, not a naturally formed canyon. Its dimensions change as the season advances and the snow melts. Seen against passing vehicles and visitors, the remaining winter accumulation feels less like a surface than an entire landscape in section.
