Japan’s Natural Wonders Beyond the Familiar View
Hokkaido’s Drift Ice | A Moving Mosaic

Along Hokkaido’s Sea of Okhotsk coast, winter can break the horizon into a mosaic of floating ice. Known as ryuhyo, the drift ice is carried south by winds and currents, changing both the appearance and the character of the sea. Icebreaking vessels offer one perspective on the shifting surface, while coastal viewpoints offer another. Its presence and extent vary with conditions, which is part of the fascination: the composition is made by weather and water rather than held in place.
