Li Hongbo’s Paper Sculptures That Refuse to Stay Still
Bust of David, 2015

The familiar face of David makes the transformation immediately readable. One view preserves the expected proportions of a classical study, while the second lets the layered neck and head sweep into a loop. What first appears to be a continuous solid surface becomes a sequence of thin, repeated edges. The paired photograph also changes how we read the upright version: after seeing the expanded state, stillness no longer seems permanent. It becomes one temporary arrangement of material that is capable of taking another form.
