Li Hongbo’s Paper Sculptures That Refuse to Stay Still
Mouth, 2013

A fragment of a face is enough to produce the same uncertainty as a full bust. In Mouth, the compact rectangular form holds a smooth pair of lips; opened out, the sheets create a ribbed volume whose geometry is much more visible than its original expression. The official image pairs both states rather than presenting the extension as another artwork. At this smaller scale, the relationship between carving and repetition becomes especially clear. The recognizable feature is only one possible reading of the paper’s layered structure.
