Li Hongbo’s Paper Sculptures That Refuse to Stay Still
Eye, 2014

Eye brings the series to an apt conclusion: an image about looking that unsettles the reliability of what we see. The compact study resembles a solid facial fragment, while its extended state becomes an almost architectural fan of paper. The ribs expose the construction without losing every trace of the original surface. Both views belong to the same work. After moving through these transformations, the closed eye can no longer be read as a simple object; it holds the possibility of another shape within its apparently fixed outline.
