London Transport Posters That Made the City Look Different
Boat Race | Charles Paine, 1923

A long rowing boat becomes an arrow against a field of blue. Paine stretches the wake across the sheet and repeats the oars until movement is almost a pattern, using a restricted palette to keep the action exceptionally clear. The title and station names provide just enough context. Made for the 1923 Boat Race, the design demonstrates how a sporting poster can communicate speed without a close-up athlete: direction, spacing and a few sharp changes of colour do the work.
