Ten Webb Images That Changed How We See the Universe
A Star’s Expanding Farewell | Southern Ring Nebula
The Southern Ring Nebula, also called NGC 3132, is an intricate envelope of material shed by an ageing star. Its ragged concentric structures preserve a history of gas and dust released over thousands of years.
The bright star near the centre is not the sole author of the scene: a fainter companion is responsible for the ejected material. In this near-infrared view, narrow rays stream through gaps in the surrounding shell. Despite the term planetary nebula, the glowing structure is not a planet.
