Ten Webb Images That Changed How We See the Universe
Galaxies in Conversation | Stephan’s Quintet

Sweeping tails, bright knots and tangled lanes of dust reveal galaxies reshaping one another through gravity. Webb combines near- and mid-infrared observations here, separating starlight from warm dust and showing the turbulent material between the galaxies.
There is a useful twist in the name: only four members of the apparent quintet form the close interacting group. The galaxy on the far left, NGC 7320, lies much nearer to us. This is both a portrait of interaction and a reminder that a flat image can hide enormous differences in distance.
