Ten Webb Images That Changed How We See the Universe
A Nearby Nursery in Motion | Rho Ophiuchi
Red jets cut across dark clouds while a pale, luminous cavity opens below. Webb’s first-anniversary image focuses on Rho Ophiuchi, the nearest star-forming region to Earth, roughly 390 light-years away.
The red structures trace molecular hydrogen excited by outflows from young stars. Elsewhere, dark, pinched shadows hint at discs surrounding developing stars. The scene captures a restless early stage of stellar life: small stars are taking shape while their winds and jets already alter the material around them.
