The Cartwheel’s bright outer ring and spoke-like structures are the legacy of a high-speed collision with another galaxy. Its unusual form is still evolving, rather than sitting permanently in the shape suggested by its name.
This combined NIRCam and MIRI view distinguishes populations of stars from glowing dust. Red streaks thread through the galaxy, while bright blue points mark stars or regions of star formation. Combining the instruments makes the collision’s layered structure easier to read than either view alone.
