10. Be Cool (2005)
A sequel (in characters and story at least) to Barry Sonnenfeld’s hit 1995 gangster film Get Shorty, Be Cool benefits from an outstanding cast but lacks just about everywhere else. F. Gary Gray’s take tries far too hard to emulate a different mid-90s gangster movie, Pulp Fiction, right down to John Travolta and Uma Thurman doing a dance scene together. Chili Palmer (John Travolta) has made the leap from gangster to music mogul, romancing the widow of a recently whacked music exec and poaching a hot young singer from a rival label. But he quickly discovers that the record industry might be a little too close to a life of crime than he initially realized. It may seem almost cheaply similar to Pulp Fiction with obvious homages and even familiar Tarantino actors like Harvey Keitel making appearances, but the insane cast, which includes Vince Vaughn, Danny DeVito, Dwayne Johnson, James Gandolfini, Andre 3000, Wyclef Jean, Steven Tyler, and many more music luminaries still make it fun.
