The Hidden Geometry of the Microscopic World
Spheres Within a Drop of Water

The rounded outline of a water droplet encloses a second world of curves: the green spheres of colonial Volvox algae. Smaller circles appear suspended inside the luminous mass, giving the photograph the visual rhythm of a miniature planetary system. Rather than imposing a pattern on the subject, the image draws attention to the repeating shapes already present at this scale. Jan Rosenboom made this second-place photograph using reflected light and a 5X objective lens, turning a modest drop into an unexpectedly expansive view.
