The Hidden Geometry of the Microscopic World
Pollen Caught in a Spider’s Web

Fine threads intersect against a dark background, carrying clusters of yellow pollen like beads on a sparse geometric drawing. The spider’s web provides the larger structure, while the individual grains introduce a second, smaller pattern along its lines. That contrast makes the photograph feel both orderly and accidental: a constructed trap has become a place where drifting particles collect. John-Oliver Dum’s third-place image was made with image stacking and a 20X objective lens, preserving the delicate meeting of threads and grains.
